Invaluable Time

Lost time is never found again
A simple reminder from Benjamin Franklin — yet it captures a truth every human being recognises.
The Qur’an begins one of its shortest chapters with an oath:
“By time — humanity is in loss, except those who believe, do good, encourage to truth, and encourage to patience.” (Chapter 103)
Time is the one resource shared equally by every person. It cannot be stored, stretched, or recovered. It is the capital of our lives — something we either invest with purpose or allow to slip away unnoticed.
The Qur’an describes this world through a vivid image:
“The life of this world is like rain… the earth’s vegetation absorbs it, then it becomes dry remnants scattered by the winds.”
Chapter 18, verse 45A plant grows, flourishes, fades, and returns to the earth. Human life follows the same arc. We live through countless moments, yet only a few remain in memory — a celebration, a loss, a turning point. The rest passes quietly, reminding us how swiftly life moves.
One day we are full of energy and possibility; before long, age humbles us and we return to the One who created us.
The Qur’an describes a conversation on the Day of Judgment:
“How long did you remain on earth?” They will say: “A Day, or part of a day.” God will reply: “You stayed only a little — if only you had known.” (Chapter 23, verses 113–115)
Every day, more than 150,000 people leave this world- which is around 2 every second. Each breath we take is unique — a moment that will never return.
We choose how to use our time: in distraction or in purpose, in what harms or in what heals, in what fades or in what lasts.
The Qur’an quotes a person who realises the truth too late:
“If only I had sent something ahead for my real life.”
Chapter 89, verse 24These reminders are not meant to frighten us — they are meant to awaken us.
Is life only about earning, consuming, and being entertained? Is our purpose simply to grow old and pass on our possessions? Or is there something deeper — something our hearts already sense?
Who created us? Why are we here? Where are we ultimately heading?
These are existential questions that shape a meaningful life. Islam invites every person — of any background — to explore them with clarity, dignity, and confidence.
Explore. Reflect. Empower your journey.
