Is Life Just A Game

Every game has rules — What about Life?
Many people drift through life as if it were a game — a cycle of eating, sleeping, working, consuming, entertaining ourselves, and chasing the next distraction.
But is that really all we are here for? Is the purpose of human existence no deeper than pleasure, achievement, or survival?
The Qur’an invites us to pause and reflect:
“Know that the life of this world is but play, amusement, adornment, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children…”
Chapter 57, Verse 20This verse is not dismissing life — it is challenging us to look beyond the surface. Everything around us has purpose. A phone, a chair, a bridge, a satellite — each was designed with intention, even though they possess no consciousness or will.
It would be strange, then, to assume that we, with our minds, emotions, creativity, and moral awareness, exist without purpose.
Signs Within Ourselves
When we admire a skyscraper or a spacecraft, we instinctively recognise the intelligence behind it.
Yet the human body — with its precision, complexity, and harmony — far surpasses any human invention. The brain processes, analyses, stores, and retrieves information in fractions of a second.
The heart beats tirelessly for decades without conscious instruction. The kidneys, liver, and immune system perform thousands of chemical operations every moment. The eyes adjust, focus, and interpret colour and depth with astonishing accuracy.
If we attribute design to machines, how can we deny design in ourselves?
Signs in the Universe
The universe around us is equally compelling. Our planet is one of countless worlds in a vast cosmic order. Galaxies move in harmony, stars follow precise paths, and ecosystems on Earth operate with balance and interdependence.
Such order cannot reasonably be dismissed as coincidence. The Qur’an asks:
“O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous — who created you, fashioned you, and balanced you?”
Chapter 82, Verse 6-8These signs — within us and around us — point to a Creator whose knowledge and power exceed anything we can imagine.
So Why Are We Here?
If someone gave you a gift, you would thank them. If someone saved your life, you would feel indebted. Yet the greatest gifts — sight, hearing, health, family, intellect, existence itself — are often taken for granted.
The Qur’an states plainly:
“I did not create jinn and humankind except to worship Me.”
Chapter 51, Verse 56Worship in Islam is not limited to rituals; it is recognising the Creator, living with gratitude, seeking what is good, and aligning our lives with a higher purpose.
To worship God, we must know Him — not through imagination or inherited assumptions, but through the description He gives of Himself. The Qur’an defines God in following Chapter:
Say, He is God [Who is] the One and Only. God, the Eternal, Absolute. He neither begets nor is He begotten. There is nothing (imaginable) equivalent to Him.’ (Chapter 112)
If Life Has No Purpose…
Denying God and rejecting any higher meaning leads to bleak conclusions. If life is just a game, then nothing ultimately matters — not justice, not goodness, not love, not sacrifice. Hope becomes fragile, and happiness becomes temporary.
But the Qur’an offers a different worldview: one in which creation is meaningful, life is purposeful, and every moment carries weight.
‘There truly are signs in the creation of the heavens and earth, and in the alternation of night and day, for those with understanding, who remember God standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth: “Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose – You are far above that! – so protect us from the torment of the Fire.’ (Chapter 3, Verse 190)
A Final Thought
Life is not a game. It is a journey — brief, precious, and filled with signs for those willing to reflect. The question is not whether life has meaning, but whether we are ready to seek it.
